Concorsa d’Eleganza in the majestic Villa d’Este estate…

The Concorso d’Eleganza, on the grounds of the majestic Villa d’Este, has for years been Europe’s most beautiful and exclusive automobile and vintage event, not only because of the magnificent vehicles but also because of the unique ambiance of Lake Como. But once sponsored only by the two organizers BMW and the hotel operator of Villa d’Este, there is now more to see between Cernobbio and Como on the penultimate weekend in May – like Monterey Car Week in Pebble Beach (USA). Hyundai unveiled the reinterpreted concept of the Pony Coupé, created in 1974 by Giorgio Giugiaro (84), on Thursday. And a day later, BMW made its fans’ dream come true with its spectacular touring coupé work, the resurrection of the legendary “sneaker” Z3 Coupé.

Anyone who is really enthusiastic about cars and also hasn’t been to the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring (Germany) had a hard time avoiding the last driveway weekend at the Auto Festival on Lake Como. Although the Northern Italy resort region makes it more difficult than ever for us, this time with cold weather and constant rain. However, the list of outstanding vintage cars and their owners, the awards ceremony at the Concorso d’Eleganza, was long. And despite the rain, the queues of visitors to the public party at the neighboring Villa Erba were impressive. And those who aren’t completely wet afterward can be enchanted at the Fuori Concorso, the second strongly growing event, this time tackling the topic of aerodynamics and Porsche’s 75th anniversary.

Many previous Le Mans racers for anniversary

New cars and works have defied the constant wetness as the multi-million dollar classic cars in their various classes that transform the Villa d’Este hotel park into an island of automotive bliss each May. The Alvis Speed 25 C from 1937, the elegant Delahaye 145 Coupé Chapron from 1925, or the 3.2-liter inline-six Rolls-Royce 20 HP Allweather Tourer Windowers from 1925 just don’t fit perfectly in terms of name – you Lancia from 1955 In a regular classic car event with little to see, like the Florida coupé Pinin Farina or the old Le Mans race cars Mercedes 300 SL coupé, the Ferrari 250 GTO from 1962 or the Porsche 936/77 from 1976, they could all take it all. Spyder Sports prototype body.

In the 100th anniversary of the legendary Le Mans 24-hour race, it’s no surprise that the world’s most famous racing event has also made its mark on the Concorso on Lake Como. Even at the public fan meeting point at Villa Erba, visitors had the opportunity to marvel at the countless rare Le Mans cars from the past decades. In proper style, we had the takeaway caviar appetizer with fries for 36 euros – tasted good even when it was raining. Right next to it, the RM Sotheby’s auction was full of sights—preferably Italian-made, of course—classics and sports cars on stage. One of the stars, for example, was the elegant Ferrari 400 Superamerica SWB, which changed hands for the equivalent of CHF 3.1 million. Here, too, the car festival on Lake Como has already followed in the footsteps of Monterey Autoweek, with the Concorso d’Eleganza at Pebble Beach being featured. It will be that time again in mid-August.
