In at least one case, a student was caught in the act.

As the North German Broadcasting (NDR) reported on Thursday, in at least one case a student was caught by a supervising teacher with an associated open program on his mobile phone. He has also admitted this.

Software checks the likelihood of fraud

According to the broadcaster, Hamburg school authorities have also confirmed some suspected cases. In addition, teachers became suspicious when marking exams because the quality fluctuated greatly. Some sections were flawed, others were flawless. A check with special software showed that the texts were most likely written with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) applications.

Legal evidence is difficult

However, according to the school authorities, it is difficult to prove fraud with legal certainty in these cases, because the students have not been caught red-handed. According to the report, the chairman of the Association of Hamburg Gymnasium School Management, Christian Gefert, who was interviewed by the NDR about the cases, assumed isolated cases. He does not count on mass fraud. However, he called for clearer rules from school authorities on how to deal with AI in schools.

ChatGPT is a chat program based on advanced AI technology from the startup OpenAI, which has been open to the public since November. The software generates complex written answers to user questions within seconds. Larger companies have now also developed similar chatbots. In addition to enthusiasm, the development also evokes enormous fears. Government regulation is advocated.

The use of chatbots such as ChatGPT in schools and universities is one of the areas that has been the subject of much discussion in Germany lately. A survey of several hundred young people published on Tuesday by the German digital industry association Bitkom shows that about half of them already use the software for homework, texts or studying.
