The Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Twitter on Friday that he is currently on his way to Belgium.

Belgium initially gave no details about the release. The Omani Ministry of Foreign Affairs spoke of a prisoner exchange in which they mediated. It was initially unclear for whom Vandecasteele was exchanged.

The Iranian news agency Tasnim reported, citing unspecified sources, that diplomat Assadollah Assadi will be released in return. The prisoner exchange with the Iranian convicted of terrorism charges is controversial. Assadi was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2021 for an attempted attack on an Iranian opposition rally in France. The development worker Vandecasteele was accused of espionage and collaboration with archenemy USA and money smuggling in Iran.
