Conservative Mitsotakis wins the parliamentary elections in Greece with 61% of the votes counted

Greece’s Prime Minister and leader of the conservative New Democracy (ND), Kyriakos Mitsotakis, easily won Sunday’s parliamentary elections, leaving far behind his main rival, the leftist opposition Syriza, led by Alexis Tsipras, according to the first partial results collected by Efe.

After review of 61% of votes, ND got 40.8% ballots and takes more than 20 points advantage Syriza which gets 20 percentthe Greek Ministry of the Interior reported.

IN third place are social democrats from Pasok-Kinal with 12%followed by the Communist Party of Greece (7%) and the far-right Greek Solution (4.5%).

With 2.5%, the left-wing MeRA25 party of former finance minister Yanis Varoufakis would be left out of parliament without exceeding the threshold of 3% required to enter the House of 300 seats. Participation was 56.1%, which is almost identical to that of the last election (2019).

These elections were held with a new proportional system, which sets approx 45% of the minimum percentage required to achieve an absolute majority in the Parliament, a limit that no party managed to reach, recalls Efe.

Minister of State, conservative Yorgos Yerapetritis, pointed out that the results represent a “clear order” from the people for ND to rule alone.

This foreshadows that Greeks will probably have to go to the polls again, predictably in Julywhen the party with the most votes would be awarded up to 50 seats.

But before calling new elections, three attempts to form a government by the leaders of the parties with the largest number of votes, that in the next few days, consecutively, he will receive the corresponding commission from the president of the state.

These elections, the first that Greece has held in the last thirteen years of the economic crisis, without being under the strict economic supervision of the European Union (EU), were marked by the rising cost of living that worries the Greek population.
