Due to an ash rain caused by the Popocatépetl volcano, classes have been canceled at some 900 schools in central Mexico. Puebla state education authorities said on Thursday (local time) that 125,000 students and 6,000 teachers in 22 communities around the volcano were affected.

The volcano is located about 85 kilometers southeast of the capital Mexico City and has repeatedly emitted ash, steam and gas in recent days. The National Disaster Prevention Authority (Cenapred) advised people in the region to protect their nose, mouth and eyes, close windows and stay indoors if possible.

The Popocatépetl is one of the most active volcanoes in Mexico. It is located on the border of the states of Mexico, Puebla and Morelos and is over 5400 meters high. There is an exclusion zone of twelve kilometers around the volcano. About 25 million people live within a radius of 100 kilometers. (oee/sda/dpa)
