He waved to the waiting journalists. Berlusconi was hospitalized in early April with pneumonia. The doctors then announced that the former government leader was also being treated for chronic leukemia, from which he had been suffering for some time. He was in intensive care for almost two weeks.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, whose right-wing government also includes Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party, tweeted on Friday: “Forza Silvio” (“Forward Silvio”). She expects her coalition partner to “fight many more battles together”. Media magnate Berlusconi has dominated political life in Italy for decades. The right-wing populist was Prime Minister four times from 1994 to 2011 with interruptions. Today he sits in the Senate, the smaller of Rome’s two chambers of parliament.

Berlusconi has been ill for years. At the end of 2020 he fell ill with Corona and pneumonia. In the years before, he had to be hospitalized because of a urinary tract infection. In 2016, he underwent heart surgery. (sda/dpa)
