The Israeli army has said it killed two Palestinian militants in a firefight in the occupied West Bank. The two men are suspected of attacking an Israeli settlement a few days ago, injuring an Israeli, the army said on Saturday.
According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, both dead were 22 years old. Another Palestinian was wounded in the Israeli army’s raid on the town of Tulkarm in the northwestern West Bank. According to the army, other people have also been arrested and weapons have been seized.
The security situation in Israel and the Palestinian territories has long been extremely tense. There are repeated clashes between Palestinians and the Israeli army in the West Bank. The army has been conducting raids there since a series of attacks.
Since the beginning of the year, 105 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli military operations, confrontations or their own attacks. During the same period, 17 Israelis, a Ukrainian and an Italian were killed in attacks.
During the 1967 Six-Day War, Israel captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The Palestinians, on the other hand, are calling for the territories to become their own state – with East Jerusalem as the capital. (sda/dpa)
