The coronation of Carlos III combines ancient tradition with sparks of modernity
In London, everything is ready for the coronation Charles III, the first event of this nature in 70 years. The ceremony, which will combine a religious service with a large military parade, will draw the world’s attention to the city.
The event will be held at Westminster Abbeythe temple where 39 men and women have been anointed monarchs over the past thousand years, in an act whose script has hardly changed.
He Buckingham Palace has reported that events will begin at 10:20 a.m. local time (11:20 a.m. Peninsular Time), when Kings Carlos and Camila will head to the temple. The ruler and his wife will travel in the Diamond Jubilee carriage, Australia’s gift to the deceased Isabella II when the throne turned 60 in 2012. About 200 soldiers in full equipment will accompany them on the way.
Already in the abbey, Carlos III will visit the central nave, in front of which will be a procession of leaders of the various religions that exist in the country, as well as representatives of the Commonwealth of Nations and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Prince George, the monarch’s eldest grandson, will take part in the parade and wear some of the regalia (the royal treasury) that will be used in the ceremony.
The procession will be accompanied by one of 12 pieces of music commissioned by the sovereign from composers such as Andrew Lloyd Webber.
The coronation Elizabeth II., held in June 1953, lasted three hours. However, Carlos III made sure his was lower. So, for example, he left out the part where the nobles and members of the House of Lords had to pass in front of him to swear allegiance to him. His eldest son, Prince Guillermoin his capacity as heir to the throne, to be the only one to make this gesture.
However, the request by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, that those watching the event on television or online also swear allegiance to the monarch has caused controversy.
70 years ago, 8,200 souls were in the abbey when Elizabeth II was equipped with the famous and the heavy crown of St. However, Carlos III reduced that number to 2,200. He also invited members of other royal houses, including Spanish kings, celebrities, members of charities and personalities such as Charlotte Webb, who during World War II helped decipher the codes used by the Nazis to transmit instructions to his troops.
The monarch has also decided that the next big military parade will be shorter than the one led by his late mother. A decision he made not only to avoid additional costs, but also to avoid having to spend a long time in an uncomfortable golden carriage from the 18th century.
An updated fairy tale
Another change that Carlos III decided was related to his clothing. The monarch will not wear the tights worn by his grandfather or great-grandfather at coronations, but a military uniform. But the opulence and grandeur will be present, as will the swagger, thanks to the priceless crown jewels. Thus, the monarch will wear the so-called a golden supertunic and a long maroon cape.
You will also get holy oilswho were blessed in the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, but the same It will not contain anything that comes from animals. Carlos III is known as a defender of the environment.
Finally, we hope that when the king is sworn in, he will dedicate himself not only to the defense of the Protestant faith, but also of all beliefs, with an unprecedented gesture of religious openness and tolerance.
