Diet is the order of the day for Patches, the American hangover. The pet, which has become known on the internet for being extremely overweight, would lose a lot of weight with its new owner. Described by some media as the “fattest cat in the world”, part of the 18.3 kilograms he weighed should now disappear. So said Kay Ford, who adopted Patch after a call from an animal shelter.
The velvet paw became known in mid-April when the previous owner could no longer care for it and the animal was handed over to the Richmond Animal Care and Control shelter in the US state of Virginia. The facility’s director told Britain’s The Telegraph that this was the largest cat he had ever seen.

Patches did not fit in any of the cages and were initially placed in an employee’s office. The shelter used social media to find a new home. Soon after, Kay Ford reached out and reported the facility on Facebook. She wanted to lose weight with Patches, she wrote in her adoption application.
The diet seems to be paying off: Patches has already lost a kilo in the first two weeks. But considering he’s about three times the weight of an average tomcat, he may have a long way to go.
