The path led through many fields, through woods and along tarmac roads that seemed endless: Cooper, a golden retriever, walked 40 miles across Northern Ireland. From Dungannon to Tobermory, once across the country. Actually, he had already found a place with a new owner, but he escaped there. He was missing for 27 days until he has now resurfaced with his previous owners. They wanted to get rid of him in advance and had handed him over to an animal shelter.

However, Cooper did not return to his old family. Instead, it was returned to its new owner, Irish photographer Nigel Fleming. The animal protection organization Charity Lost Pass said his instincts brought the dog back.

Fleming is overjoyed: “I’m sitting here watching him and I can’t believe he’s home. It was a disaster,” he told the Daily Mail. Of Cooper’s escape, he said: “I tried to chase him, but he was gone right away – so the search began.” Cooper was not heard from for nearly 30 days before he reappeared.

A spokesperson for Lost Paws also said: “Cooper is a smart kid. I’ll never know how he did it, but he did. It seems incredible that he was able to do that, but dogs are amazing and that’s why we work like this every day hard to help them.” He added: “We are thrilled to be a part of his rescue and a story that will live on in his family for generations to come.”

Fleming already has another golden retriever named Molly. Cooper should now keep her company and accept her as his little new family. Fleming says: “Even when Cooper went missing, my faith in humanity was restored thanks to the incredible help that was extended to me. Today I have him here by my side and with Molly I don’t really have the words to express the gratitude I feel to lay.”

Now Cooper eats small meals. It is believed that he follows a bland diet to slowly regain the weight he lost during the 27 days of his long journey. His owner may be hoping he doesn’t return a second time to the family that abandoned him.
