The Italian Carabinieri arrested the fugitive mafia boss Pasquale Bonavota (49) in Genoa for years. Special units have arrested the 49-year-old after a long investigation in the northern Italian city, the Carabinieri announced on Thursday.
The Mafia of the Calabrian ‘Ndrangheta has been wanted since 2018. He was one of the most wanted Italian criminals and, along with other Mafia figures, was included in the Interior Ministry’s list of the most dangerous fugitives.
“A big success”
Bonavota is charged with membership in the mafia, murder, illegal possession of weapons and drug trafficking, among other things. He was the only one still on the run in 2019 after a large-scale raid in which 334 arrests were made. Until the end, Bonavota was the boss of the Sant Onofrio clan of the ‘Ndrangheta, as the Carabinieri went on to say.
Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi (60) thanked and congratulated the emergency services involved. “A great success for our detectives,” the politician said in a statement. Bonavota’s arrest is a “strong response from the state” and shows the “great commitment of the judiciary and authorities” in the fight against organized crime.
This year, several mafiosi have already been arrested who have been wanted for years. In mid-January, for example, Italian authorities succeeded in arresting Cosa Nostra boss Matteo Messina Denaro in Sicily after being on the run for 30 years. In cooperation with foreign authorities, two more high-ranking mafiosi were arrested in France and Bali. (SDA)
