In the French coastal town of Berck-sur-Mer, a car drove into a crowd on Saturday during an international kite festival, injuring eleven people.

According to initial findings, a senior (76) was behind the wheel. Prosecutors say he lost control of the car and drove slowly into the crowd.

Brake pedal confused with gas pedal

The driver apparently switched the brake and accelerator pedals, the prosecutor in Boulogne-sur-Mer said. An alcohol and drug test was negative. The man is under investigation for negligent bodily harm. He could not be questioned initially because he was slightly injured by a witness to the incident.

Rescuers said four of the injured were in serious condition. There are four women, including two pensioners aged 75 and 82. Six other people suffered minor injuries and a four-year-old child was diagnosed with shock. The multi-day kite festival in Berck annually attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world. (SDA)
