Seven miners have been killed in an explosion at a coal mine in Colombia. All bodies have been recovered and there are no more missing persons, the governor of the central Colombian department of Cundinamarca said on Twitter on Saturday. Four people were rescued after the accident in two connected mines in the municipality of Cucunubá.
Initial findings suggest a high concentration of methane gas led to the explosion on Thursday, according to a statement from the South American country’s mining authority. The closure of the Cucunubá mine had already been ordered on December 29 due to safety concerns, but this instruction was apparently ignored. On March 14, 21 miners were killed in a mine explosion in the neighboring municipality of Sutatausa.
Accidents in Colombia’s coal mines, which are often poorly secured, happen again and again. Following the ban on Russian coal imports into the EU due to the war in Ukraine, the country is currently one of Germany’s main coal suppliers.
