A tragedy took place in the middle of New York on Tuesday evening: a parking garage in Manhattan collapsed, killing at least one person. Several people were injured in the incident.
The multistory building in Manhattan’s financial district had “collapsed to the basement,” the current head of New York’s building management, Kazimir Vilenchik, said at a press conference on site Tuesday.
Four injured people have been taken to hospital, according to rescuers. Another person was also injured but refused medical attention, the fire service said. They were trapped between the cars. Everyone involved was working in the building when it collapsed around 4:10 p.m.
Videos show cars stacked on top of each other
Video footage of collapsed walls and cars piled on top of each other was released online. Smoke seemed to rise above the rubble. The exterior walls of the parking garage were still standing. However, New York Mayor Eric Adams, 62, said there were fears that other parts of the building would collapse.
Due to the risk of collapse, all rescuers had to leave the parking garage, according to fire chief John Esposito. The building will be searched further with a robot and drones for possible other trapped persons. New York residents were asked to avoid the area around the accident site.
‘We knew it wasn’t safe’
As the “New York Post” quotes a young man who works next door to the garage, the collapse came “out of nowhere.” “We heard a loud noise and knew it wasn’t safe,” said the 22-year-old.
It was initially unclear why the multi-storey building collapsed and is now under investigation. (SDA/AFP/dzc)
