Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishda (65) had to be suddenly evacuated on Saturday during an election campaign. As Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported, an “explosive noise” was heard in his neighborhood.

According to an NHK reporter at the scene, it was believed that “something had been thrown in and it exploded”. Kishida was reportedly taken to safety unharmed.

Kishida wanted to give a speech in Wakayama in support of a candidate from his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Shortly before the scheduled start of the speech, the smoke bomb exploded with a loud bang. A man was then overpowered by security forces.

In July last year, Kishida’s predecessor, Shinzo Abe († 68), was also shot dead on the street during a campaign speech in the old imperial city of Nara. The assassination attempt on the prime minister sparked outrage around the world. (SDA/dzc)
