Xi and Lula advocate strengthening the alliance against the United States

Both presidents are committed to the fact that relations between China and Brazil play a “crucial role for world stability and peace.”

Xi Jinping and Lula da Silva defended dialogue and negotiations from Beijing as the only sustainable way out of the crisis caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The solutions to stop the war in Ukraine remain unclear. Lula defends the creation of a committee of intermediary countries where the two sides will sit for negotiations. For its part, China has presented a twelve-point peace plan, which has not been well received in the West because it does not foresee the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine.

The two countries have signed cooperation agreements in areas such as trade, renewable energy sources, health, the digital economy or the aviation industry. Brazil, defying pressure from the United States, has pledged to continue cooperation in China’s semiconductor industry and bet on its 5G technology. Lula invited Xi Jinping to visit his country in 2024 to see first-hand the projects that are interested in attracting Chinese investment.

Visit to Baerbock

In recent weeks, Beijing has become the center of diplomacy. Coinciding with the visit of Lula da Silva, German Minister of Foreign Affairs, Annalena Baerbock.

The German showed a much harsher tone than the one shown by President Emmanuel Macron last week. He rated “horror scene” the possibility of military escalation in the Taiwan Strait and called on China to influence Russia to stop the war in Ukraine. It is also concerned that “Human rights are becoming more and more limited” in China.

Arrest of dissidents
