Five people were injured in the collapse of a building in the center of Marseille on Sunday night. People may still be alive under the rubble, but there may also be deaths, Marseille mayor Benoît Payan said on Sunday morning.
A fire had started under the rubble. This complicates the rescue work. It’s not yet known exactly what happened, but there must have been an explosion, Payan said.
During the night, a house collapsed on Rue Tivoli in the fifth arrondissement of Marseille. According to reports, parts of neighboring houses also collapsed. According to information from the fire service, about 80 people have been brought to safety.
French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin expressed his support for the emergency services. He is expected in the southern French port city during the day, Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne announced on Twitter. (sda/dpa)
