Everything and everywhere at the same time” won seven “Oscars”. The film describes our healthcare system just as accurately. Pharmacy on every corner. Doctors work in direct competition with each other. Almost nowhere in the world has more hospitals per capita – if profits fall, beds are cut.
Every host who knows how to count prefers to serve a fillet to a guest instead of a servelat. Since they were supposed to make a profit, hospitals operated in a similar way: they did what was profitable. Capitalism is more important than the Hippocratic Oath. The problem is the wrong incentives: a thorough health check is now much less profitable than surgery.
The consequences of this erroneous design are steadily rising health care costs and annual insurance premiums. However, it is not only service providers or politicians who are responsible for this.
Even the beneficiaries of the world’s best healthcare system – we patients – have to take it by the nose: “everything, everywhere at the same time” has a price. Anyone who no longer wants to pay for it should not worry about the emergency waiting time – and should sign the will as soon as possible.
