Iran’s police are now using “smart” technology against women

In the future, Iranian police want to use the technology to track down any women who violate the Islamic Republic’s strict dress code.

From next Saturday, violations of the headscarf requirement will be recorded using “intelligent cameras” and other devices in public squares and streets and those affected will be identified, police chief Achmad-Resa Radan said on state television on Saturday.

Radan warned that all women without hijab would be warned first and brought to justice in a second phase. Car owners would also be warned if any of the occupants broke the rules. If this happens again, the vehicle may be impounded.

Protests have been going on in Iran for months over the death of the young Kurd Mahsa Amini. She died in mid-September after the vice squad arrested her in Tehran for violating the strict dress code for women. Since then, the number of women breaking the rules has continued to rise.

In late March, the head of Iran’s judiciary, Gholamhossein Mohseni Edschei, announced that removing the veil would be seen as “hostility to Iran’s values” and punished accordingly. (sda/afp)
