A building collapsed in the center of Marseille on Sunday night. The incident happened on Rue Tivoli in the fifth arrondissement, the mayor of the southern French port city, Benoît Payan, announced on Twitter.
An eyewitness who lives near the collapsed house spoke of a “huge explosion”. According to the police, there is no information yet about the cause of the accident. At first nothing is known about possible occupants of the house and victims. The streets around the collapsed building have been closed off.
The police and fire brigade were on the scene. Initially, nothing was known about possible victims of the accident. Unconfirmed reports of an explosion circulated on social media. Some sources speak of a gas explosion. Images and videos posted by users showed a building in ruins.
