“I firmly believe that China plays an important role in building peace,” Macron said shortly before in Chinese on short message service Twitter about the war in Ukraine. He wanted to “discuss and promote” this in his speeches. Xi Jinping received Macron with military honors. After the bilateral meeting, there was a round of three with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.

Macron had already discussed the conflict in Ukraine in an earlier meeting with the new Chinese Premier Li Qiang. It was also about the access of French companies to the Chinese market, especially in aviation, food and finance, as the Élysée Palace announced.

During a meeting with parliament speaker Zhao Leji, Macron also highlighted the impact of the war in Ukraine on security and global strategic balance. It is also important that China swiftly ratifies international agreements such as one on biodiversity on the high seas, the UN Convention on the Legal Immunity of States and Their Property and the UN Convention on Civil and Political Rights, the Élysée Palace said.
