Rai Vloet (27) collided with his car into a family car in November 2021. A four-year-old boy was killed in the incident. The court sessions were emotional.
The Heracles Almelo footballer was immediately suspended by his club after the drama. As a result, he first moved to Kazakhstan, to Astana. He is now under contract with Ural Yekaterinburg in Russia. He is now sentenced in his home country to two and a half years in prison and a four-year driving ban.
Emotional court hearings
At the beginning of the trial, Vloet did not confess. He was distracted by the cruise control when the accident happened. According to t-online.de, an expert found that Vloet was driving at more than 200 kilometers per hour at the time of the accident and that the brake had not been activated.
Over time, Vloet became remorseful: “I feel pain and regret. I will carry that feeling of guilt with me for the rest of my life.” According to a message from the NOS TV channel, this remorse has not reached the family of the victim. The mother of the deceased boy is said to have addressed Vloet directly during the hearing: “Our lives are ruined and you carry on as if nothing happened – playing football in Kazakhstan and Russia.”
When asked by the judge whether Vloet had moved abroad because of the accident, he only replied: “The Netherlands has become a bit uninhabitable.”
According to Rundfunk West, the professional footballer was not present when the verdict was handed down because he is currently staying with his club in Russia. There is no extradition treaty between the countries. Vloet would have announced through his lawyer that he wanted to serve his sentence. It is unclear whether he will appeal the ruling. (dti)
