Scottish police said they had arrested Peter Murrell on Wednesday as part of an investigation into the finances of the Scottish National Party (SNP) and are now being questioned by investigators. The 58-year-old was released in the evening without charge.
Murrell was until recently responsible for the finances of the ruling SNP, but was eventually forced to resign from the important party office due to inconsistencies – including with regard to party membership. The party does not want to comment on the investigation, but says it will cooperate fully.
The arrest is also likely to spark speculation about Sturgeon’s own reasons for stepping down. In February, she announced that she would be stepping down from the leadership of the party and government after more than eight years for personal reasons. Her fellow party member Humza Yousaf (37) has been the new head of government in the northernmost part of Great Britain since the beginning of this week. After a turbulent election campaign, he wants to unite the party behind him.
The Scottish National Party works in government with the Scottish Greens and represents Liberal Progressive politics. The main aim, however, is to usher Scotland into the EU as an independent state from the UK and back. (sda/dpa)
