A tornado has left a devastating path in the US state of Missouri, claiming the lives of at least five people. The responsible sheriff confirmed the death toll in a message on Wednesday (local time). The highway police spoke on Twitter of “dead and injured”.
The tornado passed west of the small town of Marble Hill early Wednesday morning. Video footage on American television showed uprooted trees and completely destroyed houses. The magnitude of the destruction necessitated a large-scale rescue operation, the sheriff said.
The weather service had previously warned of tornadoes in the region. At least 26 people died and dozens were injured as a result of violent hurricanes in several US states over the weekend. Media spoke of a rare “monstrous storm system” stretching from the southern United States to the Great Lakes region in the north. Experts also attribute the increase in natural disasters in the US to the effects of climate change. (sda/dpa)
