34 charges. He considers himself “not guilty” 34 times. Former US President Donald Trump (76) remains true to himself even in his most difficult hours – and considers himself untouchable. Also by judges, prosecutors and courts.
He had to go down during the indictment on Tuesday. For the first time he was in the spotlight – and silent. Not a word passed his lips, waiting journalists were ignored. While protesters loudly demanded his imprisonment.
Silence in New York, Trump style in Florida. In his speech Tuesday night at Mar-a-Lago, Trump once again pulled out all the stops.
Speaking in his resort’s throne room and before an audience of loyal fans, Trump blasted Democrats and prosecutors. “I never thought something like this could happen in America,” Trump said, complaining that the country was going to shit under Democratic leadership. He portrays the prosecution against him as an attempt by his political opponents to eliminate him before the 2024 elections. The allegations have not been proven to be politically motivated. What the public prosecutor considers to be facts does not interest him and his supporters anyway.
Trump says in Florida what he had already announced with his meaningful silence in Manhattan: “The only crime I have committed is the fearless defense of our nation against those who would destroy it.” He receives thunderous applause. “UNITED STATES! UNITED STATES! USA!” his supporters cried out to him.He presents himself as a martyr and they believe him.
Warm-up exercise for the election campaign
The reality is that Trump will be a presidential candidate who will have to stand trial. After the already well-known allegations, more serious charges could follow: his handling of classified information at his Mar-a-Lago property in Florida, his role in the storming of the Capitol, allegations of 2020 election fraud in Georgia.
Whether it helps or hurts Trump, the upcoming election campaign will be like no other. Democrats want to believe the indictment will ultimately end Trump’s hopes of retaking the White House in 2024.
But it may just as well be that his fiery speech and self-promotion even catapult him to the position of crowd favorite for the 2024 election. Because in a country divided by a “you versus us” mentality, the Republicans will side of the allegedly wrongly accused ‘Make America great again’ hero.
Trump’s appearance in Manhattan criminal court on Tuesday could be a warm-up exercise for events to come. The trial against him will not start until January at the earliest – the outcome is uncertain. With Trump, the spectacle is the only certainty.
