Getting behind the wheel one more time: at the age of 93, Betty Buckland’s dream came true. The senior from Edinburgh was allowed to fly over Scotland in a Cessna, assisted by pilot Andrew Reid, the PA news agency reported Tuesday.

The experience of flying at about 150 miles per hour at an altitude of 600 meters was “exciting” and “brought back so many fond memories,” Buckland said afterwards. “It was a beautiful day and we had fantastic views of The Kelpies near Falkirk.” The well-known image shows two water spirits in horse form.

It wasn’t Buckland’s first time piloting an airplane. For years she spent summer vacations with a cousin in the US who was a pilot and often let her take the controls of his Piper PA-28. Now, on March 23, the 93-year-old took off from Kirknewton Air Force Base, southwest of Edinburgh, as part of Care UK’s Wishing Tree initiative, which grants wishes to residents of retirement homes. The brisk flight seemed to be a success: after landing, Buckland appeared with a beaming smile. (aeg/sda/dpa)
