US First Lady Jill Biden visits Nashville after an elementary school shooting

After the frenzy at an elementary school in the American city of Nashville, First Lady Jill Biden visited the scene of the attack.

The wife of US President Joe Biden traveled to the school in Tennessee on Wednesday (local time), where three children and three adults were killed in a gun attack on Monday. Jill Biden looked at a makeshift memorial with large pictures of the dead. She touched the pictures and paused. She later wanted to participate in a vigil for the victims, including singer Sheryl Crow.

According to police, the shooter in the killing spree was a 28-year-old Nashville woman who used to go to school. According to investigators, she self-identified as transgender. This is the name given to people who do not – or only do not – identify with the gender documented at birth. However, the police made contradictory statements about the gender of the perpetrator, which caused confusion among the public. The exact background of the act initially remained unclear.

The law caused great consternation in the United States and fueled another debate about possible gun law reform. The United States has long experienced massive levels of gun violence. Rampages and shootings are part of everyday life there. (sda/dpa)
