According to information from Riyadh, the foreign ministers of regional rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran want to meet in the coming weeks.
A meeting must take place before the end of the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan, on April 20, the Saudi state news agency SPA reported on Monday. Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan and his Iranian counterpart Hussein Amirabdollahian agreed on this in a telephone conversation. A specific date or place for a possible meeting was not mentioned.
Real rivals Iran and Saudi Arabia want to resume bilateral relations after seven years of ice age. Both countries, which have not maintained diplomatic relations in recent years, are vying for political and military influence in the region. A rapprochement could lead to major unrest in the region, including in civil war-torn Yemen, where the countries support rival factions.
