Hurricanes are raging in the US state of Mississippi. 23 people have already died. “Unfortunately, these numbers are expected to change,” the civil defense said on Saturday.
At least one tornado swept through the state, the National Weather Service confirmed. This caused damage in the cities of Silver City and Rolling Fork, the authority writes on Twitter. There were also reports of other tornadoes in the US media, some of which originated in the neighboring state of Alabama.
Neighborhoods razed to the ground
A local resident told CNN the destruction was severe. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” Brandy Showah of Rolling Fork, Mississippi, told the station. “It was a great little town – and now it’s gone.”
According to media reports, the storms in the state swept roofs off houses, knocked down trees and power lines, and nearly leveled some parts of the city. About 100,000 customers in Mississippi and the neighboring states of Tennessee and Alabama were without power early Saturday morning, the site “poweroutage.us” reported.
Nothing was known about the age of the victims. Rescue and recovery workers are on duty, civil protection reports on Twitter. The agency previously warned of a series of tornadoes in the region. (SDA)
