Ford last week pulled the curtain on a new Ford Explorer, an all-electric model that’s almost entirely different in design. In this article, we highlight a distinctive feature of the model, namely the “secret” vault.
After this article, the vault may not be that secret anymore, although it shouldn’t really be seen as a vault either. After all, a car is never a truly secure place to store your valuables.
The Ford Explorer’s secret vault
Ford also says that you shouldn’t really think of the room as a secret vault. That said, there’s a steel lock in the center tunnel that really secures the window when you’ve locked the car. When the car is open, you can just slide the screen from top to bottom.
The screen for the safe works with mechanical clicks, so you can adjust it to the height you want. In the following video you can see exactly how this works.
The mechanical sliding of the safe’s infotainment screen contrasts with the touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel and center tunnel. Not to mention the not very conveniently placed controls for the (fog) lights and the defroster behind the indicators and the steering wheel.

The compartment under the screen is not the only storage space in the car. For example, you have wide door compartments and you can stow everything you need in the center tunnel. 17 liters of stuff can be stowed in the center tunnel. For example 3 bottles of water of 1.5 liters each or even a 15 inch laptop. Unfortunately, no laptop fits behind the encrypted safe behind the screen.
