According to official information, at least 18 people have been killed following the floods in southeastern Turkey after more bodies were found.
Rescuers continue to find missing persons in the particularly affected towns of Sanliurfa and Adiyaman, Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu said on Friday. According to him, 16 of the dead were found in Sanliurfa. The water in the city is polluted and undrinkable, Soylu told reporters in Sanliurfa.
In the capital of the province of the same name, which borders Syria, residential buildings and clinics were temporarily flooded after heavy rainfall over the weekend and schools remained closed. Two people were killed in the floods in neighboring Adiyaman province.
Just five weeks after the quake, the bodies of water had flooded an already disaster-ravaged region, where thousands of people live in makeshift shelters such as tents. Local media see poor infrastructure and buildings along the riverbeds as the main reasons for the severe flooding. Authorities warned of more heavy rain over the weekend. (sda/dpa)
