As the president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro (63), announced, Honduras wants to establish diplomatic relations with China. Your foreign minister will establish official relations with the People’s Republic of China. This is reported by the AFP news agency.

However, the president of the Central American country left open whether this means that Honduras will cut relations with Taiwan.

Tensions between China and Taiwan had recently increased. China maintains military pressure with increased deployment of its air force and navy near Taiwan. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, international concern is growing that China could take similar measures against Taiwan. The US has been committed to Taiwan’s defense capabilities since 1979, which until now has mainly come down to arms shipments.

China considers Taiwan part of the People’s Republic and eventually threatens to conquer it if “reunification” cannot be achieved in any other way. However, Taiwan has never been part of the communist People’s Republic established in 1949 and has long considered itself independent. The island is of geostrategic importance due to its location on economically important sea routes and was formerly described by US generals as an “unsinkable aircraft carrier”. (dzc/SDA)
