The Italian aid agency “Emergency” claims to have rescued 105 people fleeing distress in the central Mediterranean.
They included a woman who is seven months pregnant and 25 unaccompanied minors, the organization said on Tuesday. The people were on a rubber boat. After the engine failed, the organization took people to the “Life Support” in international waters near the Libyan coast on Tuesday night.

During their mission, the “Life Support” crew immediately thought of the devastating boating accident in Crotone, southern Italy, about a week ago, said Emanuele Nannini, Emergency program director. “Again, this was a boat in a dangerous situation where people risked their lives because of the terrible conditions.”
Meanwhile, emergency services have recovered the lifeless body of a three-year-old girl in the waters off Steccato di Cutro, where the shipwreck occurred. The number of victims thus rose to 71, a commander of the Carabinieri confirmed when asked. More people are missing; about 80 people survived the accident. (sda/oee)
