A baby from the UK went missing for weeks. It is now clear: the baby is dead, British media report based on the authorities.
The remains of the baby’s body were found in a wooded area in Brighton, in the south of the country. Not far from the place where the aristocrat and mother of the child, Constance M.* (35) and her partner Mark G.* (48), were arrested on Monday.
“It is my sad duty to report that police officers have found the remains of a baby,” British detective Lewis Basford said in a statement on Wednesday.
The baby has not had any medical care since birth
The pair previously evaded authorities for weeks, refusing to disclose the whereabouts of the missing child. The child was born in early January and has not received medical care since.
According to British media, the couple has been traveling around the country in a taxi since January and has successfully escaped the police. The two are said to have always paid in cash, covered their faces as soon as surveillance cameras were in sight and often changed their whereabouts.
About 200 officers searched for the baby with high pressure
At the beginning of this week, the couple went online thanks to tips from the population. In addition to suspicion of child neglect, they are now also charged with manslaughter by gross negligence.
The disappearance of the newborn had sparked a nationwide search. More than 200 officers were involved in the search, according to CNN. In addition to helicopters, sniffer dogs, thermal imaging cameras and drones were deployed. An autopsy must now reveal what happened to the newborn. (dzc)
