US Republicans in the House of Representatives have launched an investigation into the origins of the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus and the government’s pandemic policies.

In letters to senior former and current members of President Joe Biden’s administration on Monday (local time), they requested information, according to a statement. Addressees include US immunologist Anthony Fauci, who at times advised Biden during the pandemic, as well as intelligence coordinator Avril Haines and Secretary of Health Xavier Becerra. According to broadcaster NBC, the investigation is partly based on skepticism among Republicans about what US government officials and intelligence agencies knew about the virus.

“Americans deserve real answers after years of suffering from the coronavirus pandemic and related policies,” said Brad Wenstrup, chairman of the Corona subcommittee. Government scientists and government-funded researchers have so far not been very accommodating in their knowledge and actions. “We can’t accept more years of walls,” Wenstrup said.

“Evidence continues to mount that the virus escaped from an unsafe lab in Wuhan,” said Republican James Comer, head of the House Oversight Committee. You want to look at the facts, what could have been done differently to better protect Americans. At the same time, Comer said they would hold U.S. government officials involved in any kind of cover-up accountable.

In the Chinese city of Wuhan, the virus was first noticed in 2019 as the cause of an unknown lung disease. Sars-CoV-2 quickly spread around the world. Many experts assume that it comes from trafficked animals. But the thesis of the accidental release of the virus from a laboratory is also discussed further. (aeg/sda/dpa)
