A London police officer risks decades behind bars for numerous rapes. The 48-year-old used his power to violently and brutally abuse several women, prosecutor Tom Little said in court in the British capital on Monday.

“If given the opportunity, he would use it to rape, sexually assault or assault and/or humiliate the victims,” Little said. It was systematic abuse. It didn’t matter if he had a long-term relationship with the women or had only known them for a short time.

In January, the suspect admitted to committing a number of crimes over a period of nearly 20 years. He is regarded as one of the most serious criminal serial rapists in recent British history. The verdict is expected on Tuesday.

The police officer allegedly humiliated some of his victims by locking them in a small storage room or by urinating on them. According to the indictment, he intimidated the women with his police ID card. The man only flew up when a woman reported him in 2021. More victims then reported. The detectives do not rule out that the police officer has committed many more crimes than is admitted.

The 48-year-old was checked several times during his career, but was always allowed to continue working. The London police apologized for it. The Interior Ministry ordered all police forces in the country to check their officers’ records against police databases. The case commemorates the murder of Londoner Sarah Everard, who was abducted, raped and murdered by a Metropolitan Police officer in March 2021 using his identity card. (aeg/sda/dpa)
