Eight dead in bloody nightclub attack in Mexico At least three dead and hundreds injured in Iran earthquake

Eight people have been killed in an armed robbery at a nightclub in the Mexican city of Jerez. According to the authorities, heavily armed men opened fire in the club “El Venadito” on Sunday night.

Six people were killed instantly, two succumbed to their injuries during emergency medical care. According to local media, the victims included musicians, visitors and employees of the nightclub. Five people with gunshot wounds were still in hospital on Sunday. According to eyewitnesses, people at the club panicked at the massacre.

Jerez in the northern state of Zacatecas has been the scene of several violence in recent years. This led to the displacement of hundreds of civilians from surrounding villages last year.

In Zacatecas, Mexico’s two most powerful drug cartels, Sinaloa and Jalisco Nueva Generación, fight for supremacy in the illegal drug trade – especially for the US.

More than 340,000 people killed

Mexico has been raging for years in a bitter drug war between rival cartels. Since 2006, more than 340,000 people have died and about 100,000 people have disappeared.

Former Mexican Security Minister Genaro García Luna, whose job it was to lead Mexico’s anti-drug war, is currently on trial in New York. However, he allegedly helped the infamous Sinaloa Cartel smuggle cocaine into the United States and received millions of dollars in bribes for doing so. (sda/afp)
