The Palestinian Authority has ended security cooperation with Israel. On Thursday, the authority cited Israel’s unilateral steps and measures in the West Bank and the deaths of at least nine Palestinians in the city of Jenin as the reason. Several dozen people were injured in an Israeli raid there that morning – one of the deadliest military operations in years in the Palestinian Autonomous Region. In the afternoon, a 22-year-old was also shot dead in clashes with the army.
The autonomy authority had made similar announcements on previous occasions, but they were not actually implemented. Cooperation between Palestinian and Israeli security forces dates back to peace negotiations in the 1990s. Both sides exchange intelligence to prevent terrorist attacks or to coordinate major operations in areas solely controlled by the Palestinian Authority. It is also intended to prevent militant groups from gaining the upper hand in the area.
Most recently, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas ended cooperation in May 2020 in view of Israeli annexation plans. Behind the scenes, however, she continued. Israel also captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem in the 1967 Six-Day War. Negotiations on a permanent peace settlement have been stalled since 2014. (sda/dpa)
