After years of delays and skyrocketing costs, a new connecting terminal has opened at Grand Central station in New York.
Trains on the Long Island Rail Road from the Queens district and from Long Island, which lies off the coast of the metropolis, have been arriving at “Grand Central Madison” since Wednesday — the first arrived at 11:07 a.m. local time, with Governor Kathy Hochul on board, among others.
Located below the world-famous Grand Central train station, the connecting terminal is decorated with mural mosaics by artists such as Yayoi Kusama and Kiki Smith.
The New York City Transportation Authority expects about 160,000 people a day at the station. Construction work began way back in 2001 and was repeatedly delayed for various reasons, with costs eventually exploding to about $11 billion. (sda/dpa)
