On Chinese New Year, Jan. 22, a gunman opened fire on revelers at a dance hall in Monterey Parks, California. He met 20 people, ten of whom died on the spot.
Then he wanted to continue his killing spree in a second restaurant. There Brandon Tsay threw a spanner in the works. With much moral courage, he intervened before more bloodshed ensued:
Tsay worked at the cash register and is the owner’s son. When the armed 72-year-old entered the nightclub, Tsay acted and was able to take the gun from him. As a result, he saved many lives, said Robert Luna, the Los Angeles County Sheriff in charge of Monterey Park. Tsay is a hero, he said.
Tsay himself said in an interview that he was terrified, yet acted courageously because he wanted to protect his family and friends.
The shooter took his own life after the crime. His motives are still unclear. (lzo)
