With an interest in Revendo, Migros continues to focus on the circular economy. The start-up buys used electronic devices from individuals and companies and prepares them for further use.
What does Revendo offer?
Founded in 2013 by entrepreneurs Aurel Greiner and Laurens Mackay, the company aims to use the so-called upcycling concept to extend the life of computers and smartphones and thus reduce electronic waste and wasted resources, the retail group writes in a statement on Tuesday. .
The used electrical appliances purchased from Revendo are – if necessary – upgraded and repaired with spare parts. In addition, all old user data will be deleted before the hardware goes on sale again.
How successful is the upcycling pioneer?
Over the past ten years, Revendo has become Switzerland’s leading company for used electronic devices, they say. No information is given about the size of the stake that Migros holds through his venture capital firm Sparrow Ventures.
Revendo currently employs 140 people. It has an online store and ten of its own stores in the cities of Basel, Zurich, Bern, Biel, St.Gallen, Lucerne and Winterthur, as well as in the Austrian capital Vienna.
What changes for customers?
Nothing.
The partnership is a minority interest of Migros. “The strategic decisions remain with the operational founders.”
Those responsible promise that Revendo will remain an independent company and continue to offer its products and services as usual.
Why does Migros invest?
With its stake in Revendo, Migros continues its push in the used goods trade, the statement continues. It has set itself the goal of further strengthening the circular economy in the future and expanding the portfolio accordingly.
In the fall of 2022, the retail group already announced an investment in the start-up Yuno. This aims to offer customers an alternative to buying devices such as smartphones, digital cameras or computers by renting them out.
