In Germany, a man turned around in the middle of the Autobahn due to a traffic jam and then gave chase with a large police presence. The driver of a Mercedes sports car was driving on the A81 near Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen on Friday evening, police in Ludwigsburg said. When he got into a traffic jam, he turned his car and drove off the highway after a short distance.
Two other road users reported the maneuver via an emergency call. Shortly afterwards, officers in a patrol car saw the Mercedes, which had meanwhile returned to the highway, and gave chase. The police officers asked the driver to stop, but he accelerated instead. “Due to the high speed, the officers lost sight of the vehicle,” said the police.
The Mercedes was later spotted again and the police resumed the chase, but the fugitive sped off “at an estimated speed of over 250 km/h” via several highways. Several patrol cars chased him in vain. The crew of a police helicopter that had now been alerted kept an eye on the car and eventually saw the man park the car and get out. He escaped unnoticed.
Police seized the car and launched an investigation. According to the information, a total of 41 patrol cars were involved in the pursuit. (sda/afp)
