“Vikings: Valhalla‘ will get at least a third season and a blast – that’s for sure. After that, it could actually continue, which series creator Jeb Stuart has already alluded to. Because if audiences want to see more of the “Vikings” spin-off, he already has ideas for another trilogy, i.e. for possible seasons 4, 5, and 6.
But that’s music for the future. Season 3 definitely comes first – and the season 2 finale gives us a pretty good indication of what the upcoming episodes could be about. Watch out, follow spoiler to the second season of Vikings: Valhalla!
Harald and Leif in Constantinople
One thing is clear: in season 3 we see the adventures of Harald Sigurdsson (Leo Suter) and Leif Eriksson (Sam Corlett) in Constantinople, where they will meet the Byzantine general George Maniakes (Florian Munteanu), among others.
Not only does Harald want to raise the funds for an army, he could now find himself caught up in a double love triangle: Because he fell in love with Elena (Sofya Lebedeva) on the journey from Novgorod to Constantinople – only to find out at the end that she was promised to the Byzantine Emperor Romanos (Nikolai Kinski).
Harald between Elena and Freydis
However, Elena informs Harald in the Season 2 finale that he shouldn’t let this prevent him from courting her… But that should lead to Harald coming into conflict with the Emperor. Not exactly conducive to his plans to get rich in Constantinople.
And also: is Harald’s heart really free? Because when he starts flirting with Elena, a love triangle develops elsewhere: the one with Freydis (Frida Gustavson), with whom he now has a son. During Season 2, he told Leif that he would find and marry Freydis after returning to Norway. But the fact that Freydis didn’t tell him about her pregnancy could have shaken Harald’s confidence forever, so he has now turned to another woman.
Leif Eriksson sails to America
So while Harald is caught between two women, his friend Leif has already lost two loves – Liv (Lujza Richter) and Mariam (Hayat Kamille). But Mariam left him something that should be very important in Season 3: the key to their house in Constantinople. Shortly before her death, she handed it over to Leif and said anything he found there would help him on his way.
And we know the further path of Leif Eriksson, at least that of the historical figure: he will sail to America. Leif is already a very experienced and capable seafarer. But he learned a lot more about astronomy and navigation from Mariam in season 2, including getting to know the astrolabe. In the scientist’s house he could now find more knowledge in the form of books, maps and devices that could help him in his future sea adventures – or inspire him to want to discover new worlds.
However, it remains to be seen if Leif will depart in season 3, or if it will happen at the very end of the upcoming season, as a sort of “goodbye” to his character and potential content for another trilogy.
Freydis as guardian of faith
And then, of course, there are the events in Norway and England. Freydis clearly claimed to be the Keeper of the Ancient Faith at the end of Season 2. So she will continue to follow this path in Season 3 in Jomsburg – which could ultimately drive a wedge between her and the Christian Harald.
And in England the Conflict between Queen Emma (Laura Berlin) and Count Godwin (David Oakes) keep escalating. Because while King Canute (Bradley Freegard) still trusts Godwin, a war of intrigue has long erupted between Emma and the Crown’s adviser. Emma now knows that Godwin is trying to eventually get his family to the throne and that he is behind the attempted murder of her – which he then prevented in order to win the king’s favour.
The Ring: Emma’s challenge to Godwin
Emma has made it clear to Godwin that she’s all over the picture because of the ring she gave Godwin’s new wife that scared him so much on their wedding night: a clear declaration of war from Emma! She had previously taken the ring from Godwin’s foster father, John Barr, whom she had tracked down in Sussex and who had arranged the assassination attempt on Godwin’s behalf. Emma now knows the background – and made sure Godwin does.
But even if his plot was discovered, Godwin is still a lot closer to his goal. Because his plan finally worked. King Knut gave him Princess Gytha (Henessi Schmidt) as his wife. As a result, Godwin married into the royal family and his descendants would indeed have a legitimate claim to the throne…
When is season 3 of Vikings: Valhalla coming?
These season 3 storylines follow quite clearly from the events of the season 2 finale. By the way, the new episodes are already in production, with the beginning of Third season of Vikings: Valhalla on Netflix we expect late 2023 or early 2024. But how will season 3 end? That’s what series creator Jeb Stuart already hinted at – and natural epic battles play a part in that. You can read more about this in the following article:
