Biden Criticizes First Republican Bills Record Number of Hawksbill Turtles Hatched in the Amazon

US President Joe Biden has criticized Republicans in the House of Representatives and announced possible opposition to their legislative initiatives. At the start of the legislature, Republicans with their new majority in the House of Representatives presented plans to relieve top earners and tax working families, Biden said Monday in Washington.

Among other things, the Democratic president referred to a legislative initiative that would provide for a national sales tax on the use or consumption of taxable goods or services, replacing the former income tax and other charges. Another bill from the Republicans aims to reverse better financial resources for the US tax agency IRS.

At the beginning of January – after the congressional elections – the Republicans took over the majority in the House of Representatives. In the other chamber of Congress, the Senate, Biden’s Democrats still have a slim majority. Because both chambers are responsible for legislation, the new Republican initiatives have little chance of success.

However, Biden insisted that if any of these projects landed on his desk to be signed, he would veto it. The president can veto legislation passed in Congress – a two-thirds majority in Congress is required to overturn it.

At the same time, Biden said he was always willing to work with Republicans in Congress if they wanted to do something together to further fight inflation, create new jobs and build an economy that works for everyone in the country. (sda/dpa)
