The emeritus Pope Benedict XVI According to his successor Francis, he is “very ill”. The current pope asked the faithful for a “special prayer” for the 95-year-old Benedict at the end of the general audience in the Vatican on Wednesday. Francis and the Holy See initially gave no further details.
“I ask all of you for a special prayer for Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, who quietly supports the Church,” Pope Francis told the Vatican news portal “Vatican News.” “Think of him, he is very sick. And ask the Lord to comfort and sustain him in this testimony of love for the Church to the end.”
Born in Bavaria, before his election as pope Joseph Ratzinger has lived in relative isolation in a monastery in the Vatican since his resignation in 2013.
It has been said for months lately that Benedict is physically weak and can barely speak. Mentally, however, he is fit for the circumstances. At irregular intervals, Benedikt, who is cared for by his old companion Georg Gänswein and nuns, also received visitors.
