The British royal family will celebrate Christmas for the first time in 2022 without Queen Elizabeth II, who died in September. There was therefore speculation beforehand: would the new King Charles make changes to the traditional processes and if so, which ones?
The royal expert Ingrid Seward now gives more detailed assessments to the British “Mirror”. Accordingly, Charles proves to be only partly a traditionalist, the festival not running in all respects as it did under the Queen.
King Charles III: Changes for Christmas
For the 2022 bank holiday, the royals have gathered at Sandringham, having spent the previous two years at Windsor Castle. Charles was “always a traditionalist,” the author notes.
However, the past few months have given her an important clue. As Seward points out: “When he moved into Clarence House after his grandmother’s death, he largely kept the furnishings, but on a much more lavish scale.” According to this motto, King Charles should now also spend the contemplative holidays:
This is reflected, for example, in the expansion of the guest list. “His goddaughter Lady Sarah Chatto is there with her husband and children, as is her brother Lord Snowdon, who plays an increasingly influential role in Charles’s court,” Ingrid Seward points out.
In addition, Sarah Margaret “Fergie” Ferguson is participating for the first time this year, including her children. The expert explains: “In the past, Fergie often stayed alone at Wood Farm while Andrew and the girls had lunch with the Queen and Prince Philip.”
In general, the motto for the guest list now applies: “The more, the merrier.” It is particularly important to Charles and Camilla to ensure an “immaculately high standard” during the holiday season.
King Charles: early departure?
The question now is how long Charles will stay in Sandringham. Queen Elizabeth II maintained the tradition of staying there for several weeks after Christmas, but there are many indications that the heir to the throne will leave much sooner.
The King will move to the Birkhall estate in Scotland shortly after New Year’s Eve, according to the Daily Mail. Charles therefore attaches great importance to spending a lot of time in his home country during this phase.
