It was a phrase that made you sit up and take notice. Steven Gätjen announced in the interview with Boris Becker on Tuesday evening, among other things, that he wanted to talk about the remuneration of Sat.1 and “what will happen with it in the future”. The question of money is, of course, an obvious one for a man who has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for bankruptcy.
Gätjen’s motto gave hope: “We will ask relentlessly”, the interviewer said before the start of the conversation. But after about two hours of discussion, it was realized that the fee was not being discussed. News about Boris Becker’s personal bankruptcy? Also non-existent.
“The interview was broadcast as it was conducted”
At the request of t-online, the broadcaster remained silent. “The interview was broadcast as it was conducted,” said broadcaster spokesman Christoph Körfer t-online, stressing that “many aspects” were part of the conversation. The lack of the money issue: from the point of view of the station, therefore, not a problem.
There is also no information about the amount of compensation Boris Becker received for his participation in the Sat.1 Special: “Confidentiality is a great asset that Sat.1 and our contract partners have valued for years. That’s why we don’t quote from contracts,” it says succinctly.
In various media reports, including “Spiegel” and “Bild”, one could read about half a million euros. But neither Sat.1 nor Becker comment on this. However, one thing is certain: for Boris Becker, making money has only just begun. Further income from TV contracts and the marketing of his prison history beckons.
In addition to Sat.1, Apple TV+ has also signed a partnership with Becker. It is still unclear when the two-part documentary about the tennis legend will be shown. The format is based on “three years of exclusive access to Becker before his sentencing in April 2022” and includes an interview with him shortly before his imprisonment.
Becker needn’t worry about his professional future. The Vice-President of the German Tennis Association had already made it clear weeks ago: “The doors at the DTB are always open to Boris Becker.” Becker worked as “Head of Men’s Tennis” for the German Federation from 2017 to 2020. Vice-chairman Dirk Hordorff can imagine that the former top athlete will take over this position again, but then also as “representative, chairman or whatever. To put it bluntly: Boris can choose the job ».
“I don’t know if I will stay in Europe”
Boris Becker said of his future plans in the Sat.1 interview: “I want 25 good years ahead of me.” He would have already closed a book deal. However, Becker does not believe he will settle in Germany again: “I don’t know if I will stay in Europe.” Becker is not allowed to go to Great Britain for the time being due to his deportation. He mentioned Miami and Dubai as places he likes.
In late April, Becker was sentenced to 30 months in prison for bankruptcy offenses, with 15 suspended. However, he was released last week after less than eight months in prison. This was made possible by a special rule for foreign prisoners.
Becker had pleaded not guilty at the London trial. On Sat.1 he now admitted his guilt for the first time, admitting: “I gained 25 points, I lost four points.” The jury that convicted him saw the main point that he took money from a company account. He also kept the house in his birthplace Leimen, where his mother lives, a secret.
Will Lilian De Carvalho Monteiro play a key role?
However, Becker has not explained how his bankruptcy will proceed. According to the newspaper “Bild”, there is apparently still a six-figure debt outstanding. Becker had to pay for this. Whether current earnings should be used for repayment and count as part of the insolvency estate has not been confirmed. Because under British insolvency law, for example, TV fees are regarded as income and not as assets. The trustee would therefore not have direct access to it.
Becker’s lawyer Christian Oliver Moser replied to a request from t-online about conditions in Germany and possible changes as a result of Brexit: “There are no independent insolvency proceedings in Germany.” Becker’s partner Lilian De Carvalho Monteiro may play a special role. According to “Bunte”, the risk analyst founded the company BFB Enterprises – BFB stands for Boris Franz Becker – to market the tennis star. Because the 55-year-old is not allowed to run companies due to the ongoing insolvency procedure, everything must go through Lilian in the future.
He is certainly planning a future together with the Londoner, who is more than 20 years his junior. Steven Gätjen asked him if he would stay with her forever, and Boris Becker replied, “Of course I hope forever and ever.”
