“The Secretary-General is deeply concerned by media reports that the Taliban have suspended access to universities for women and girls,” a spokesperson said in New York on Tuesday evening (local time). “The Secretary-General emphasizes that the denial of education not only violates the equality of women and girls, but will also have a terrible impact on the future of the country.” Guterres called for equal access for women and girls to all levels of the education system, it said.
On Tuesday, the Taliban immediately banned women from all universities in Afghanistan. Since taking power in August 2021, Islamists have massively restricted women’s rights. Girls and women are largely excluded from public life.
