According to British media, several people have been killed in a boating accident in the English Channel.
According to information from Sky News, there were about 30 to 50 people on the boat with migrants on board, who fell into distress in the early hours of the morning, some of whom did not survive, the broadcaster reported, citing a French source. The “Telegraph” reported at least three suspected deaths. There was initially no official confirmation of the deaths.
On Wednesday, the Coast Guard coordinated a search and rescue mission with the army, police and border guards, involving at least two helicopters and British and French lifeboats. It was initially unclear what exactly happened to the crashed boat.
The search for missing persons will continue for the rest of the day, Sky News reported, citing internal sources. However, due to the cold temperatures – in recent nights it has dropped below zero in the region – there is no longer a search for survivors.
A year ago, 27 people died in a boating accident in the English Channel. Many thousands of migrants have recently made the perilous crossing to the United Kingdom. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak only announced plans on Tuesday to crack down on illegal migration.
British Home Secretary Suella Braverman, known for her radical stance on migration, wrote on Twitter that her thoughts are with all concerned. You are being notified of the “shocking incident” and the authorities are working to clarify the situation. (aeg/sda/dpa)
