Eva Kaili temporarily removed from power in EU parliament over corruption scandal UK economy has been in recession for a year

December 10, 2022 EU Vice President Eva Kaili arrested amid corruption investigation in Brussels
An anti-corruption campaign in the European Parliament with links to Qatar sparked violent reactions in Brussels on Saturday. MEP Eva Kaili, arrested on corruption charges, has now been stripped of all powers.

Kaili was arrested by the Belgian police on Friday. Parliament Speaker Roberta Metsola has withdrawn the 44-year-old “with immediate effect from all powers, duties and duties” as her deputy, a spokeswoman for Metsola announced Saturday evening.

Only Parliament itself can decide to remove Kaili from the position of Vice President.

A total of five people were arrested in Brussels on Friday. In addition to Kaili, who was previously one of Parliament’s 14 Vice-Presidents, her partner, who also works in the European Parliament, was also arrested.

The scandal revolves around the suspicion that Qatar has tried to influence the decisions of the European Parliament with significant sums of money and donations. The events were the result of investigations by the Belgian judiciary into money laundering and attempted influence.

Former TV presenter Eva Kaili has now become the face of the scandal. The 44-year-old was elected to parliament for the Pasok party, which belongs to the Social Democratic group. (con/sda/afp)
